Flash Advertising - you’re probably involved

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

When you hear the words “Flash” and “advertising” together in the same sentence, what is the first thing that immediately comes to mind and what feelings or thoughts go along with it? Unfortunately I think the answer I hear from a lot of people (both in and out of the Flash community) is that they think of very poorly designed, distracting, annoying banners not unlike some you might see where you click on your state name to apply for a mortgage. However, if you stop to think about for just a second you’ll realize that using Flash to create advertising means much more than that. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be writing a few posts on this topic in an attempt to enlighten some folks and reinforce what others already know - Flash advertising is not nearly as bad as it is perceived to be.

I’d like to start by talking about a form of advertising that is not always thought of as such: websites and micro sites. If you have ever worked on a project building either one of these in Flash, then there’s a fairly high chance it was advertising something. Whether it was for an actual product/service, an organization of some sort or even just to show off your own work, you were advertising. On the other side of those projects are the visitors of the sites who take on the role of the consumer. Will they be interested in buying the product? Will they donate money to the organization? Will they hire you because of your great work?

Q: So why are there people out there that see some Flash sites as something other than advertising?
A: Because those sites engage and entertain them.

What they may not realize at the time is that they are leaving from those sites with an impression of the company’s brand somewhere in their mind and in some cases they’re even passing the site (and therefore the brand) on to their friends. Below, I’ve included just a few examples of sites (in no order whatsoever) that have generated some sort of a buzz in the online world. And the reason they generate that buzz is usually not because of the products they represent, but because they engage and entertain the user to the point that the user wants to share the experience with others. While some of the examples are very obvious advertising, some of them may sneak under your advertising radar while still accomplishing their goals. Feel free to comment with more sites you know of that have taken on the same kind of online “life”. And remember that no matter how much someone tells you that they don’t like Flash, they don’t like online advertising, and they definitely don’t like the combination of the two, they have probably enjoyed just as many of these sites as the rest of us.

Philips Bodygroom
The Philips Bodygroom site got passed around for a while with people talking about the clever use of humor to get the point across.

Get the Glass
A more recent site that has been going around is Get the Glass! (got milk?) The use of interactive 3D animation got some people talking about this one and the fact that you could play a game in that 3D world made it that much more fun.

Nike Air
How about the Nike Air site? While the site allows you to view the TV spots and “Explore the shoes”, I think the biggest part that people were interacting with was the area where you interact with the videos to “Create More World”.

Subservient Chicken
And I definitely can’t leave out Burger King and their Subservient Chicken site.

Again, feel free to comment with more sites you know of that have taken on the same kind of online “life” as these examples.

New Casio G’zOne site launched

Friday, December 15th, 2006

Casio G'zOneWe launched a new site this week for the Casio G’zOne (pronounced “Geez-One”) which uses a good amount of Flash video to show off several of the phone’s features. I’ve heard the G’zOne referred to as Casio’s “man phone” due to the fact that you can drop it, dunk it in water, get lost and find your way back with the navigation service, and even use the camera flash as a flash light (speaking of, I believe this phone supports Flash Lite). Since I didn’t personally have my hands in this project, I’d like to go ahead and say “great job” to my coworker, Shawn.

Check out the site when you get a few minutes.

Hands-On Guide to Creating Flash Advertising

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

It’s official… I’m currently in full swing writing my book! The book, titled “Hands-On Guide to Creating Flash Advertising”, is going to be a part of the Hands-On Guide series published by Focal Press and has a publication date set for October 2007. The thought behind the book is to help people understand the process of planning, designing, and building an online ad campaign and/or micro site for a client. It will cover topics like reaching your target audience with the correct media placements, building your ads or micro site, and tracking the performance of both. I’ll also be writing about different options for ads such as in-page, expandables, floating ads, and video units.

For those who are interested, I’ll be posting a link to pre-order as well as more information as I get the chance.

Fruit Guys site launched

Friday, August 25th, 2006

Fruit GuysThe site www.fruitguyfans.com was launched by our agency today on behalf of Fruit of the Loom. It is a fun way to interact with the “fruit guys”. On the site you can watch all of the music videos that the guys have been in, download mp3s of the songs and read their lyrics, learn about each of the fruit guys, and treat yourself to some bonus items like bloopers from the shooting of the “Blue” video. There are some subtle yet advanced scripting techniques in the site as well having to do with manipulating bitmap data to create a killer color swirl. Check it out.

Official launch of SimplyPerfect.com (Patrón Tequila)

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

Patrón Simply PerfectToday we officially launched a new site for Patrón Tequila. As mentioned in this article in The New York Times (registration required), SimplyPerfect.com ties in with the “Some perfection is debatable” campaign where perfection is debated on various topics of discussion. The debates include topics such as Football v. Fútbol, The Book v. The Movie, Blondes v. Brunettes, and Caddyshack v. Animal House. To argue their side of a particular debate, users can add comments or upload audio or video of themselves making their points. If a person is looking for a discussion on a particular topic, they can use the search function in the site. Or maybe they would like to use the sorting function to see a list of debates that are about sports only. In addition to searching, sorting, and contributing, users can also suggest new topics to discuss on the site.

With the file uploading, the dynamic voting/commenting, the audio/video, and all of the wonderfully fun things Flash allows us to do in one place, I’d love to hear what you as the Flash community have to say about the site. So check it out when you get a chance and have fun.

Pork on tour

Monday, March 20th, 2006

Pork World TourI was thinking that since I work for an interactive advertising agency, I should probably add an Advertising category to my blog. In adding this new category, I’d like to start it off talking about some work we’ve done for The National Pork Board. You know, “The Other White Meat“. The campaign? Pork World Tour. The concept? A singing, guitar playing pork chop.

The Pork World Tour campaign goes hand-in-hand with the Don’t Be Blah campaign that launched last year. The idea behind it all is to change normal, boring dinners into something fun and exciting. For the pork tour, songs were written based upon different recipes on The Other White Meat website. After the songs were recorded mini music videos were designed and then brought to life in Flash with animation and interactivity. So let’s get to the “meat” of this campaign, shall we? You can view the videos in QT or Windows Media format here and don’t forget to keep an eye out for the actual ads that are floating around out there.

For more detailed information on the Pork World Tour, check out this article on clickz.com by Pete Lerma.
