Moving On2 the subject of video – part 2
In part 1, I talked about just a few ties between On2 and online video. In this part, I’d like to talk about a couple of areas On2 is involved in outside of the internet.
Before I get going, I’d like to point out a link that someone emailed me as an introduction to On2 for those that aren’t familiar with the company. Click here to read it.
Now On2 the rest of my post:
Let’s start with XM Radio and how they teamed up with On2 to unveil Satellite Video Delivery at CES earlier this month:
From the story:
“The advanced concept video receivers are designed to receive audio and video entertainment from XM’s signature satellite content delivery services. Video content can be either streamed live or stored on the in-vehicle receivers for later playback. These solutions leverage groundbreaking On2 VP7 technology to ensure the best quality video at low data rates.”

How about the Texas Instruments DSP (digital signal processors) Partnership:
“DVD-quality video at under 1 Mbps. Ideal for low-bit rate VOD, surveillance, or IP initiatives. Codec is scalable to accommodate network throughput. Achieves superior results across various consumer playback appliances. Bit rate is 85% more efficient than MPEG-2.”
Or, if you’re more into mobile platforms, try the On2 and CTTnet connection:
“On2 and CTTnet stated that they have achieved significant technical milestones in integrating VP7 on the Symbian(TM),Smartphone and PDA mobile operating system and currently have VP7 operating on four Symbian handsets more than ten Smartphone and several PDA at data rates as low as 28 kbps, flow video playing at 5-8Frame per second.”
– By the way, CTTnet is China Transport Telecommunications Broadband Network Service Co., Ltd…. Do you know how many people there are in China? And do you know how many phones, PDAs, handsets, etc. that means there are in China? I’ll leave it at that.
How about On2′s partnerships with companies like Electronic Arts for video games? Or maybe the partnership with LeapFrog? Or BBC? Or Intel? I could go on and on, but I think you should just take a quick look at On2′s client/partner list. You can find it here.
Ok, I need to cut this post now (I’ve got an extra early start tomorrow morning). As a final word, I’d like to say keep an eye on these guys, I think they are going to be a major force in the field. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
Drag, drop, watch – On2 Video Publisher for Adobe Flash 8
From the site:
The On2 Video Publisher for Adobe Flash 8 is a web browser plug-in that enables users to encode video content (either pre-recorded or captured live from a camera) in Adobe Flash 8 format and upload the video to a website or file server.
To encode video, all the user needs is a web browser–nothing else!
If you are a web site that supports or wants to add video sharing, blogging, or uploading, the On2 Video Publisher offers the following advantages:
- Incredibly simple to use – drag, drop, watch!
- Decreased upload time. Users upload compressed video instead of large, uncompressed (or poorly compressed) files.
- Decreased server load. You won’t need racks of dedicated servers to compress uploaded video. Processor-intensive encoding is done on the user’s own computer!
- The best video quality, period. Users upload videos that are already converted to Flash 8, saving you the trouble of trying to support conversion of every videos format under the sun, such as Windows Media, Quicktime, Real, MPEG-2, H.263, and so on.
- Speed. There is no waiting for a server to transcode the video. Once encoded video is uploaded it can be instantly posted on your site for viewing.

Moving On2 the subject of video – part 1
So let’s talk video a little bit, shall we? More specifically, let’s talk codec… let’s talk On2. I’ve got several posts here that directly involve On2 Technologies and there has been a good amount of discussion about them between me and a few of my coworkers. My personal focus on them is their involvement with Flash 8 and the incredible improvement in the quality of Flash video since On2′s VP6 codec was added in. I’ve had the opportunity to work on several projects which involved Flash video since the time that VP6 was added and I have to say that I am extremely impressed. Flash video can now stand up against the quality of Windows Media and QuickTime video.
With all of the talk I’ve been seeing/hearing about moving into the digital video age with internet video, video blogs (“vlogs”), video phones, etc., I’d like to take a quick look at where our friends at On2 come in. For each of these, I will pull a little info from the website of the On2 partner in question just in case anyone isn’t familiar with them.
